Fosamax enhances bone mass and decreases fractures incidence, in particular for the hip and spine areas. This medicine improves bone mass in men with osteoporosis. Fosamax also prevents osteoporosis. This product is treatment of glucocorticoid. This remedy may be used as an induced osteoporosis treatment for both men and women, with a daily dose of glucocorticoids, equal to 7.5 mg or more of prednisone, and in cases of low mineral solidity of bones, healing Paget’s bone disease for both men and women.
Alendronate belongs to the medications class, which strengthens bone. Bones stay in permanent process of remodelling, that involve old bone's removal by osteoclasts (which is kind of cells), and new bone’s forming with a help of osteoblasts. Fosamax prevents bone removal by the osteoclasts.
Take Alendronate orally, one time per day on empty stomach (in the morning). Ingest with a glass of water. Swallow the whole tablet, without chewing or sucking it. Do not replace water with juice, coffee, milk, mineral water or other drinks. The interval between the Fosamax intake and meal has to be no less than 30 minutes. Do not drink during this time. Do not take any other medications. Do not lie down during these 30 minutes. Standing or sitting position guarantees you better effect and reduces heartburn or the risk of esophagus injury.
Fosamax Safety Information
If you missed your daily dose of Fosamax, take the next dose, when it's time for it. Never take double dose at one time. Do not take two doses of this product in one day. Skipping one singular dose will not influence the result of treatment. If you are prescribed to take this product once per week, and you forgot to do it at the certain day, take it on the morning as soon as you remember to do so, and go back to your regular schedule.
Keep Alendronate in a tightly closed container at a room temperature between 15-30 degrees C (59-86 degrees F).
Fosamax Side Effects
Inform your physical specialist if you experience troubles with swallow; in case you have low level of calcium; narrowing of the esophagus; esophageal ulcers or an esophageal disease; kidney disease; any stomach or digestive problems (in particular, stomach ulcers). Talk to your doctor if you are not able to stay in standing or sitting upright position for 30 minutes. If you health conditions refer to any of these incidents, talk to your doctor before taking Fosamax. You may need extra monitoring or special dosage advices.
The action of Fosamax towards the fetus is unknown, as this product belongs to the FDA pregnancy category C. If you have plans for pregnancy, or if you are pregnant, do not start Alendronate usage until you contact your doctor on this matter. The possibility of Fosamax absorption into the breast-milk is unknown. If you are breast-feeding, do not take this medication before you ask your doctor.
Discontinue Alendronate usage if you notice an allergic reaction, such as breathing discomfort; throat closing; hives, face, lips or tongue swell. Contact health care specialist immediately in case of chest pain, swallowing discomfort or pain, burning or painful feelings in the back or under the ribs. Inform you doctor if your heartburn worsens.
Do not stop treating with Fosamax in case of abdominal discomfort; headache; an altered sense of taste; painful feelings in eyes; upset stomach, feeling of sickness like queasiness, retching, diarrhea, constipation; muscle, bone, or joint aches or soreness; a rash.
If other than these side effects occurred, consult your health care specialist. Inform your doctor about any bothersome feeling you experience.
